Subtly, yet comprehensively, re-designed from nose to tail, the 2005 S-TYPE features a new, crisper front-end design and bolder, more athletic rear proportions.
To improve weight distribution, the new S-TYPE features a redesigned hood made of lightweight aluminum in place of heavier steel. The re-engineered body also brings much tighter, closer panel fits throughout the car, emphasizing the 2005 S-TYPE's impressive build quality.
Inside, there are significant changes to the S-TYPE's cabin. Redesigned instruments feature cleaner, clearer chronograph-style dials, and for the first time on a contemporary Jaguar sedan, there's the option of a striking, high-tech aluminum fascia finish in place of traditional wood.
Aluminum fascias were made famous in previous Jaguar sports cars like the E-Type (XKE). But this is the first time S-TYPE customers will be able to choose an interior without wood trim. The aluminum trim is available on 2005 S-TYPE Sport package models and the supercharged S-TYPE R.
"The introduction of the S-TYPE in 1999 marked the beginning of a significant product expansion at Jaguar," says Joe Greenwell, Jaguar Cars Chairman and CEO. "The 2005 model year S-TYPE builds on the strengths and attributes of a car that was extensively upgraded only two years ago, ensuring the S-TYPE continues to compete at the top of its class."
On sale in North America from May, the 2005 S-TYPE range comprises 3.0 V6, 4.2 V8 and supercharged S-TYPE R 4.2 V8 models. A dynamic Sport package with uprated suspension and brakes and featuring new 18-inch wheels is available on the 2005 S-TYPE 3.0-liter and 4.2-liter.
New features available across the new S-TYPE range include 18-inch wheels, Front Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control and greater choice of interior color and trim options.
To enhance the S-TYPE's renowned sporting character and ride comfort, Jaguar engineers have uprated the suspension with low-friction ball joints and re-tuned dampers, to provide more agile handling and an even smoother ride.
Explaining the styling changes, Jaguar Director of Design, Ian Callum says the aim of the redesign was to change dramatically by changing subtly – pursuing the classic design philosophy of less is more.
"Too much detailing becomes too confusing, with no focal point. This car has a focal point and it's clear what it is – the front grille and twin headlamps. But to make it work, everything around that focus has to be as simple as possible. The extensive changes for 2005 are designed to achieve precisely that."
Changes to the front include a new grille that is subtly lower and broader and mounted more upright than before. And the new aluminum hood now has a more defined vee shape that draws the eye forward to the revised grille. A simpler, cleaner front bumper also gives more volume and more visual strength, according to Callum.
At the rear, the fenders, upper and lower bumper surfaces and rear lip of the trunk have all been raised considerably to continue the S-TYPE's sweeping sideline right through the profile. In keeping with Jaguar's new styling direction, there is a more technical look to the distinctive round tail lamps.
"The new S-TYPE lifts its shoulders and rises up from its haunches, giving a far more powerful, forward-pushing stance. It produces a younger, fresher, more athletic shape without losing its unmistakable Jaguar identity," explains Callum.
