Mitsubishi Outlander

28-09-2005
Outlander is an all-new mid-size SUV with a newly developed platform that feature increased crashworthiness and body stiffness. Outlander sports a brand new powertrain that mates an aluminum cylinder block 2.4-liter 16-valve DOHC MIVEC engine to a new Sport Mode 6-speed CVT. And with an aluminum roof panel and mono-tube shock absorbers, Outlander borrows heavily from technology nurtured in the Lancer Evolution series to deliver hard-hitting on-road performance that raises the bar for SUVs. A legitimate on-road SUV, Outlander seats 5 or 7 seats depending on trim level.

Design
The styling development objective was to create a new-age crossover design that embraces the needs of all-surface performance and versatile utility. To realize this, the team has injected a sizeable amount of modern SUV styling to create a design that satisfies the eye of the discerning adult looking for the genuine article. The silhouette sits on a rock-steady stance generated by wide tracks and huge wheels and tires. In its lean proportions Outlander displays the quiet potency of a fully trained athlete to give a stimulating taste of its easily accessible exhilarating performance.

Powertrain
To hit new heights of performance the team has given Outlander a brand new powertrain. The 2.4-liter 16-valve DOHC engine uses an aluminum cylinder block and MIVEC variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust valves. The power unit is mated to a new Sport Mode 6-speed CVT that uses steering column-mounted paddle shifters. This happy marriage spawns outstanding motive power with instant throttle response giving smooth acceleration, and also returns efficient fuel consumption.

All Wheel Control (AWC)
The aim was to develop a new-age SUV that delivers all-surface cruising performance. To realize predictable handling and allow the driver to safely follow his chosen line, Outlander marries Active Stability Control (ASC) technology to Mitsubishi's proven electronically controlled 4WD system to realize fully integrated control of engine output as well as of torque and braking force at each wheel. The new platform increases body and chassis stiffness, an aluminum roof panel lowers the center of gravity and mono-tube shock absorbers all contribute to class-topping levels of handling and stability.

Rockford Fosgate premium audio system
Outlander uses an exclusive in-car entertainment system developed jointly with Rockford Fosgate, a leading car audio brand in the United States. Tuned for pounding heavy-bass sound reproduction, the 650-watt amplifier, 25cm subwoofer, 7 predetermined equalizer setting, nine speaker, Digital Signal Processor (DSP) system produces sound in pristine audio fidelity, clarity and depth. To extract every decibel from the speakers, Outlander converts the doors into speaker boxes using sheet panel, ABS covers and sound-absorbing material to seal the openings..
